GeoFlex: Options for flexibility of geothermal power and heat generation within an energy system dominated by a volatile electricity supply

Project description:

The aim of the research project “GeoFlex” is to analyze the flexibility potential of thermal power plants used for deep geothermal projects – both from a technical as well as an economic point of view. To do so, investigations will be conducted to identify if and how deep geothermal plants are suitable to compensate the residual power demand in an adjustable way and to supply the controlling power range. In addition, costs will be determined which are associated with the use of the flexibility potential of deep geothermal systems. The determined cost structures will be compared with alternative and already existing flexibility options.

The project is divided into five work-packages (WP):

  • WP 1: Status analysis
  • WP 2: Technical flexibility properties
  • WP 3: Economic analysis
  • WP 4: Outlook and courses of action
  • WP 5: Workshop

Collaborators:

The collaborators consist of several chairs of the Technical University of Munich and the University Bayreuth. The coordination is carried out by the Munich School of Engineering of the Technical University of Munich within the project management team of the Geothermal Alliance Bavaria.
